Bulgarian traditional martenitsa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martenitsa) includes red and white thread. This one below has red and white thread, as well as textile, of course :-).
In the last possible moment, as tomorrow is March 1st, here is a quick DIY for martenitsa in candy-shape. Here are the ready ones:
Necessary materials:
– Small pieces of fabric (preferably cotton) in white and red colors
– A bit of yarn in red and white and preferably – already twisted red and white thread
– Safety pins for brooch
– Something to fill the candies with, on the picture that are silicon granules, it is the same filling that is used for pillows, cushions and etc., but you can use anything that is fluffy and light in weight, such as wadding and cotton
– Needle and thread
– Scissors and if you like to – zig zag wavy-edge scissors
First step is to cut pieces of fabric: 11 cm х 13 cm each from the chosen fabrics:
Fold the piece in two using the longer side and sew the edges together. Sew form the wrong side of the fabric. You will have a piece that is 5.5 cm х 13 cm.
Bring out the right side of the fabric, like so.
Close one of the ends with the yarn ribbon, fill in the candy and then close the other end. You will now have the candy shape. Cut the edges with the zig zag wavy-edge scissors if you like to.
Attach the safety pin to the candy. And your candy-martenitsa is ready:-).
I hope you like it.
